THIS IS THE GET QUICK
9/13/1960
The Get Quick’s debut album serves as a snapshot of the band transitioning from a teenage instrumental combo playing high school sock hops to aspiring American Bandstand balladeer bandoleros. We find barbershop doo-wop, surf rock and soul boogaloo vying with novice (yet surprisingly adept) stabs at traditional rhythm and blues and melodic pop vocal compositions. This heady headlong hodgepodge captures the band literally and figuratively trying to find their voice.
At the time, to some hardcore fans, the set seemed like a shallow and scattershot attempt to court mass appeal; to others it served as a solid demonstration of the group’s command of styles and eclectic taste. In retrospect, it is clearly the Get Quick’s calling card, their mission statement, a preliminary masterpiece and harbinger of future glories.
